Retiring and Retired people

You have worked hard during your career and the next stage of your life brings freedom to spend time doing the things you enjoy with the people that you love. Now is the time to start planning to ensure your legal plans are fully up to date. Not only will this give you peace of mind, it will also make things easier for your family. Spall Clark Solicitors can help advise you through the legal landscape to ensure you and your family are protected whatever life brings.

How we can help you in retirement

For people who are about to retire or are already retired, there are certain events which may prompt them into putting legal documents in place to safeguard themselves and their families. Some of these events include, downsizing a family home, selling a business, receiving a lump sum from a pension, purchasing a holiday home, the addition of new family members (such as grandchildren and pets) amongst many others.

Wills

It is important to update existing Wills or to make a Will if they don’t already have one in place. Making a Will is the best way to ensure that your spouse and family are taken care of in the event of your death. A Will also ensures that your assets are passed to those you would wish to benefit. In some situations, a Will trust may be appropriate to protect certain beneficiaries.

Inheritance Tax planning

As part of the process of reviewing your estate planning, our specialist Solicitors will provide advice about your inheritance tax position. They will also identify if a separate tax planning report is required to help you to structure your estate during your lifetime to ensure that you benefit from all inheritance tax reliefs and exemptions available to you.

Powers of Attorney

Our Solicitors have extensive experience advising retired people about Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPA). An LPA is a legal document which enables you to appoint one or more people (attorneys) to make decisions on your behalf in relation to your property and finances and health and welfare when you are unable to make these decisions yourself. You may consider appointing close family members or friends as your attorneys and you can leave instructions to them in your LPA about what you would like to happen in certain situations.

Our approach to retirement planning

We understand how important it is to have a financial and legal plan that works throughout your retirement. We work closely with financial advisors to create a strategy to meet your needs and help you put in place a legal and financial plan to help you get the most from your assets. We can work with your existing advisor or we can introduce you to an independent financial advisor from our carefully selected panel.

There is no charge for an initial meeting and we can meet you at home, our office, your office or any other location to suit you. We also offer meetings by online video (such as Zoom, Skype and Teams) or by telephone.
